WASHINGTON, DC – The Mary Baldwin University women’s basketball team defeated Trinity (D.C.) this evening on the road 44-41.
The Fighting Squirrels jumped out to an early 18-9 lead after the first quarter and held a 23-19 lead at the half.
In the 3rd quarter, Cheyanne Michael came off the bench to give Mary Baldwin’s offense a boost scoring 5 points in the period.
The Fighting Squirrels struggled to score in the final period but held Trinity to just 8 points taking the 44-41 win.
Mary Baldwin’s balanced scoring attack was led by Mikala Reid and Rakeema Willis who tallied 9 points each. Cheyanne Michael and Kaitlyn Crews followed closely with 8 points each. Reid also finished the game with 12 boards while Teanna Peavy grabbed 11 rebounds.
Trinity’s Amaya Webb finished the night with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
After the game, Head Coach Ross James said, "First, I want to thank Coach Atkinson and her staff on the warm welcome we received upon arrival. They made us feel right at home from the beginning. Tonight's game was decided by which team could make the right decision late in the game. Tonight we managed to escape with a few less errors and it allowed us to come out ahead. The team is eager for our first conference game on Saturday. I am looking forward to having a full roster with all my players in practice before we open up."
Mary Baldwin University, 1-3, begin conference play this weekend traveling to Methodist University on Saturday and North Carolina Wesleyan College on Sunday.
