The Mary Baldwin University women's basketball team opened their season on the road at the Wilmington College Tip-Off Tournament Friday evening. The Fighting Squirrels fell to the Quakers 62-91.
Mary Baldwin started well leading the game early in the first period but the Quarkers controlled the boards and used that advantage to build a solid lead throughout the first half.
Rakeema Willis led the offense with 23 points scoring 18 from behind the arc. Nyla Issac followed with 11 points.
After the game, head coach Ross James said, “First I want to congratulate Wilmington College on their win tonight. I encourage our players daily to do three things well. Those are communicate, play an up-tempo, fast paced game and finish each play. Tonight we executed the beginning stages of our offensive game plan, which was to play up up-tempo. I thought we communicated well with each-other but where we fell short was finishing each possession on the defensive end. We allowed too many offensive rebounds versus a team that finishes plays well around the basket. This is an area we will improve. “
Mary Baldwin continues play in the Wilmington Tip-Off Tournament this afternoon taking on Wittenberg University at 1pm.
