STAUNTON, VA - The Mary Baldwin University women’s basketball team fell to Wilson College in overtime Sunday afternoon 78-82 in a non-conference matchup.
The Phoenix jumped out to a 29-23 halftime lead taking advantage of a sluggish Mary Baldwin shooting percentage.
The Fighting Squirrels came back in the second half scoring 29 points in the 3rd quarter. Kaitlyn Crews tallied 14 points in the period shooting 4 for 6 from behind the arc while the team shot 53.4% from the floor.
Mary Baldwin continued to battle in the final 10 minutes behind a balanced scoring attack but struggled to contain Wilson’s Lindsey Purvis. The 6’0 center scored 11 points in the period to keep the visitors alive and force the game into overtime.
In extra minutes, Rakeema Willis made a 3-pt. shot then followed with two free throws to give Mary Baldwin a 77-72 lead with 3:44 left in the game. Jasmine Wallace answered with a jumper to put the visitors to within three then Jordyn Day sank a 3-pt. shot to tie the game and followed with two free throws to give Wilson a 79-77 advantage. Teanna Peavy added a free throw to give Mary Baldwin 78. Jordyn Day’s two free throws late in the game solidified the 82-78 win.
For Mary Baldwin, Rakeema Willis finished the day with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Kaitlyn Crews tallied 20 points and Cauy Duboise added 12. Teanna Peavy led the team in rebounds with 11.
Mary Baldwin University, 0-4, continues play on Wednesday as they travel to Trinity before starting conference play next weekend.
