STAUNTON, VA – Mary Baldwin University’s Department of Athletics has announced that Ruth Thompson will become the new head women’s volleyball coach.
Thompson comes to Mary Baldwin from Riverhead’s High School where she has led the program to a 65-8 record over the past three seasons.
“We’re excited to have Coach Thompson bring her experience to help grow and develop the wonderful raw talent here, she will be a great fit for our program,” stated interim athletic director Lynda Alanko. “As a former Division III athlete herself, she understands the importance of the student-athlete experience. Having been named East Region and Shenandoah District Coach of the Year, and being named Teacher of the Year for both Shelburne Middle School and Staunton City Schools previously, Coach Thompson truly understands how to achieve success both on the court and in the classroom.”
“Our goal at Mary Baldwin is to give our student-athletes a rewarding college experience. The education our students receive provides opportunity for successful careers, and the relationships that are created through participation in sports can last a lifetime. Coach Thompson is the right person to provide the tools we need to be successful on the scoreboard, while fostering those valuable relationships. That balance is critical and I look forward to working with her to advance our program.”
Coach Thompson added, “I am thrilled to be part of the Mary Baldwin athletic community and look forward to working with the student- athletes here. I hope to implement a fresh vision of communication, hard work and success that inspires pride in our program.”
A native of Williamsburg, VA, Thompson received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Eastern Mennonite University. She currently teaches at Shelburne Middle School.
