Bridgewater, VA--The MBU Cross Country team competed in its first race of the season this afternoon, finishing 2nd to host Bridgewater College. Leading the way for the Squirrels were freshmen sisters, Colette and Elyse Levens. After controlling the race pace for the first half, they went on to finish 5th and 9th respectively.
Juniors Lindsay Sopko (14th) and Stephanie Barbaro (15th) were right behind, and each ran about 1:00 faster than they did on the same course last year. Rounding out the top 5 finishers for MBU was sophomore newcomer Jaquelin Rosas, who finished 21st.
Two other new faces finished 6th and 7th for the team: sophomore Jo Reeder and freshman Elise Deng.
Coach Ely was pleased with how everyone ran. “The team competed well under the circumstances. For much of the team, this was their first race, and cold rainy conditions aren’t ideal. But to see them with smiles and excitement afterward—they are just getting started. It will be interesting to watch them grow through the season. I’m looking forward to seeing what the Levens sisters and the rest of the top 7 can accomplish, and I’m excited to help them get there.”
Next up for the Fighting Squirrels is the JMU Invitational on Saturday, September 9th at New Market Battlefield. Races begin at 10:00 am.
