Fighting Squirrels Raise Money for the $5.55 Drive

Fighting Squirrels Raise Money for the $5.55 Drive

Every spring, Mary Baldwin Athletics collects spare change for the USA South Conference “Pennies for a Purpose” community service project. This is the ninth year the USA South has hosted this event.

The initiative started at the beginning of the spring semester, and this year it ended on April 7th. Each school in the USA South raises as much money as they are able, and then donate it to a charity of their choice. This year, the USA South’s donations through the Pennies project totaled $16,072.03, besting last year’s total of just over $10,000.

Mary Baldwin’s Fighting Squirrels contributed to the USA South total by raising $500.30 for the $5.55 Feminine Hygiene Drive. This is a local charity that provides feminine hygiene products to 25 homeless girls in Augusta County. It costs about $5.55 to supply one girl for one month. Many of these teens often miss school when they are on their period because they do not have access to the necessary sanitary supplies. The $5.55 Drive raises money to supply them with the necessary supplies so that they can attend school everyday with confidence, focusing on their education and future.

While the main purpose of Pennies for a Purpose is to improve the USA South communities, it is also a friendly competition between the schools to see which one can raise the most money. The winning school is presented with a plaque, and is the Pennies for a Purpose champion for an entire year. Averett University has won the competition for the past three years; however, the most important part of the competition is not the winner, it is the charity.

Thanks to everyone who donated to this year’s cause--win or lose, any amount of money is something to be proud of. Our community is a better place because of the “Pennies for a Purpose” competition. Way to go, Fighting Squirrels!
