Four former Mary Baldwin standout student-athletes comprised the sixth class for induction into the Hall of Fame will be held Sunday (10/19) at the Hotel 24 South in Staunton during the University's Mary Baldwin's annual Alumni Weekend.

The ceremony, honoring the collegiate careers of Lauren Logan '96, Kelly Thorkilson '00, Katrina Scruggs '06 and Colena Lord '09, also recognized the reunion years of a pair of Atlantic Women's Collegiate Conference (AWCC) championship teams – the 1995 Volleyball and 2000 Field Hockey squads.
The Mary Baldwin event began with former Fighting Squirrels coaches Sharon Spalding (volleyball) and Lou Moore (field hockey) speaking about their experiences with those championship teams.  Following those memories were the inductions that expanded the Athletics Hall of Fame expanded to 23 members.

Lauren Logan '96, a Business Administration major from Virginia Beach, Va., was a three-sport athlete for Mary Baldwin and was named the College's Athlete of the Year in 1996.  For the Fighting Squirrels, Logan swam for four years, played defense for the lacrosse team for three years and one season for the softball team.

Other awards Logan earned during her collegiate career included the MBC Scholar-Athlete Award (1996), Most Valuable Swimmer, Most Improved Lacrosse Player and was an all-conference selection on the lacrosse team.  She was also a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Omicron Delta Kappa and Who's Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges (1996).
She began her post-MBU career as an IT consultant at two corporations, including IBM, and continued to work in the technical industry while earning her master's degree in Sports Management.

Currently, Logan is the Assistant Student Activities Coordinator and head coach for three sports (field hockey, swimming and lacrosse) at Ocean Lake High School, where she earned Lacrosse Coach of the Year awards in 2023 and 2024.  She also runs a non-profit lacrosse league in Hampton Roads.

Logan and her husband of 21 years Doug Gates have three children, including two who play women's lacrosse at the University of Mary Washington and another who is a first-year student at the University of Virginia.

Kelly Thorkilson '00, from Virginia Beach, Va., graduated with a Biology degree after four years of playing field hockey and lacrosse for the Fighting Squirrels.  She was among the first members of the Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership (VWIL) students at Mary Baldwin, the world's only female cadet corps which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

From the NCAA website, Thorkilson played 46 career lacrosse games, scoring 93 goals and 19 assists for 112 points.  Her career highs in goals (30) and points (37) were during her senior year while her best year for assists was in 1997, when she had nine helpers.  She was also a member of the 1999 AWCC field hockey championship team.
Among many awards she received, Thorkilson was the Mary Baldwin Athlete of the Year in 2000.  She was also named a 1997 AWCC Scholar Athlete, to the 1999 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Academic Squad, the 2000 Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and the 2000 General Douglas MacArthur Award.

Following graduation at MBU, Thorkilson was commissioned and spent 22 years as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard, with stints on both the East and West coasts, specializing in disaster response such as oil and hazardous materials spills, hurricanes, tsunami activities, border operations and the Pandemic.
While on active duty, she coached scholastic lacrosse teams and played in adult leagues on the west coast.  She is now based in Virginia Beach, Va., and is married to high school teacher Matthew Gutt.  She serves as the Incident Management Preparedness Advisor for the Coast Guard's East District, focusing on strengthening national readiness for complex emergencies and environmental crises.  She enjoys traveling, weightlifting, golfing and aerial acrobatics.

Katrina Scruggs '06, from Norfolk, Va., played basketball for Mary Baldwin and was the leading scorer in team history when she finished her career.  She still ranks second all-time in Mary Baldwin women's basketball scoring with 1,697 points and is also among the institution's leaders in scoring average (fourth, 15.57 ppg.) and 10th in rebounds (416).

The Fighting Squirrels reached double digits in victories each year she played, including 19 wins in 2004, a record that still stands for most wins in a season.  The 2004 team won the Atlantic Women's Collegiate Conference title, only the second in Mary Baldwin women's basketball history, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the only time in team history.
She was the team's Offensive Player of the Year in 2003 and a three-time all-star in the AWCC, including first team in 2005.  She was also an Honorable Mention selection for the Va. Sports Information Director's All-State team.

Following her career at MBU, Scruggs earned her Master of Public Health, with an emphasis in Health Promotion & Education, from Old Dominion University and Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2010.  She married Michael Johnson in 2008 and has two teenage daughters, who are both basketball players.
Currently, she is the sole proprietor of KSJ Investigative Solutions LLC, working on several government contracts as an investigator & medical site inspector.  She also serves as the youth choir director at her church.

Colena Lord Roberts '09, from Savannah, Ga., was an Anthropology and Sociology major as an undergrad and added a Master's in Education degree to her accomplishments in 2014.
During her Mary Baldwin career, she played volleyball and was named AWCC Freshman of the Year and first-team all-conference in 2007, then was a standout for the program during its transition to the USA South Athletic Conference.  In 2008, she was an Honorable Mention choice and added Academic All-Conference recognition in 2009.

She still holds the team records for kills in a season (474) and a career (1,167).  She also has the third (347) and fourth (346) highest marks for kills in a season.  Also strong at the net on defense, Roberts has the fifth-highest single season mark for blocks (95) and ranks second all time in career blocks (184).
After her collegiate career, Roberts has joined the collegiate athletics field in communications and is in her 10th year as the Sports Information Director at Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD).  She has earned conference and NAIA national recognition as the Sports Information Director of the Year.
The highlight of her summer of 2025 was getting married and planning the future together.
