STAUNTON, Va. – A goal from Ousmane Dansoko in the 36th minute lifted the Mary Baldwin University men's soccer program to a 1-0 victory against Methodist in USA South action at SMA Worth Field on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Fighting Squirrels pull even at 6-6 on the season and move to 3-4 in league action, while the Monarchs fall to 2-6-1 overall behind a 1-5-1 mark in conference play.
Dansoko is now tied for the team lead with five goals with three of the five coming in the last week and a half. Dansoko was able to get free and came down the middle of the field beating the keeper for the goal at the 35:17 mark of the contest as MBU held a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Neither side found the back of the net for the rest of the contest. With less than 20 minutes left in the game, the Fighting Squirrels thought they had an insurance goal, but an offside call negated the header and kept the score at 1-0 through the remainder of the contest.
Mary Baldwin outshot the visitors by a 20-14 margin, including 14 attempts in the second half alone. The Methodist goalkeeper, Cole Hupp, was forced to make seven stops, while Obdulio Argueta pushed aside five shots in his third shutout of the season.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action tomorrow, Saturday Oct. 5, with a matchup against USA South West-leading Covenant at SMA Worth Field beginning at 2 pm.
