STAUNTON, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University men's soccer team is set for its first round match up in the USA South Tournament against N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday.
The Fighting Squirrels, who earned the No. 4 seed in the East, will battle the No. 1 seed in the East, N.C. Wesleyan, on Nov. 2 at 2 pm in first-round action. The winner of the contest will face the winner of the No. 2 seed in the West, Maryville, and the No. 3 seed in the West, Piedmont.
MBU competed in its first season as a varsity team this fall after joining the University's athletic department as a club team a year ago. Picked to finish last in the East division, the Fighting Squirrels fought to an 8-10 overall record behind a 5-8 league mark to capture the final spot in the division.
In the final game of the regular season, Mary Baldwin defeated Averett, 1-0, to clinch a tournament berth, thus eliminating Averett and ending their season. Meanwhile, the Battling Bishops have not lost in over a month with their last defeat coming against Covenant, which finished the year undefeated in league play.
Earlier in the 2019 campaign, the Fighting Squirrels fell to the Battling Bishops, 4-2, in Rocky Mount. NCWC opened the scoring and held a 4-0 lead before MBU scored twice in the second. In the contest, USA South Rookie of the Year Carr Panetta netted both goals for MBU.
Other first-round games in the tournament include the No. 2 seed in the East, Greensboro, hosting the No. 3 seed in the East, William Peace at 3:30 pm and the top-seeded Covenant hosting the No. 4 seed in the West, LaGrange at 4 pm.
Admission to the game is set at $6 for adult general admission and $3 for seniors, children and university members and students. Those traveling to the game on the fan bus provided by MBU will have their cost of admission covered by the University.
