HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Mary Baldwin University softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader against Eastern Mennonite at Gehman Field on Wednesday.
The Fighting Squirrels went down 8-0 (5 Inn.) to the Royals in game one before EMU came back with a 7-0 win in the nightcap.
In Game 1, reigning USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Week Lindsay Simmons, Jordan Miller and Madison Cash each recorded hits, including a double for Simmons and Cash. For the Royals, Emily Campbell finished 3 for 4 at the plate with a home run and three RBI, while Danielle Brenneman and Beck Hoskins both tallied two hits and a pair of RBI.
Courteney Back received the loss after giving up seven runs in 3.0 innings in the circle. Kelsi Martin picked up a 5.0 inning complete-game shutout for the Royals as she grabbed her fifth win of the year.
Simmons also recorded a hit and a walk in Game 2, while Sam Breeden laced a double in the loss. Campbell belted her second home run of the day and finished with three RBI to total six on the day. Simmons was strapped with the loss after going 4.0 innings and allowing all seven runs. Morgan Hughes entered in relief and tossed 2.0 innings of scoreless work. Alia Miller pitched a complete game shutout and scattered four hits, while collecting 11 strikeouts.
Mary Baldwin returns home on Friday, March 15, with a doubleheader against Covenant scheduled to begin at 2 pm.
