GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Mary Baldwin University softball team was swept by Greensboro in a pair of close games in USA South action on Wednesday evening.
In a set of games originally scheduled to be played yesterday, both sides remained scoreless entering the fifth inning. In the frame, Courteney Back stepped to the plate with two outs and belted her team-best five home run of the season to give the Fighting Squirrels a 1-0 advantage. The Pride struck back with a run to tie the contest in the home half of the inning on a two-out score of their own. Jasmine Worthy singled home Megan Gerdeman who singled and moved to second on a sac bunt, 1-1.
After a scoreless sixth frame, MBU started off the final inning with a base hit as Madison Cash reached first, but the next three hitters were put down in order to preserve the tie entering the home half of the seventh. Allyson Loy drew a walk before stealing second and third and scored the game-winning run on a ground ball, 2-1.
The Fighting Squirrels were held to just three hits, including the home run by Back. She also tossed 6.0 innings in the circle and allowed just one run on seven hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.
Maddy Wetherhold grabbed her 11th victory of the season after pitching a complete game and scattering just three hits with seven strikeouts.
In the night cap, GC scored three runs on three hits, including a triple, in the fifth inning and held on to the three-run advantage for a 3-0 victory. Cheyanne Cox pitched a complete-game shutout for the Pride with 12 strikeouts and held the Fighting Squirrels to just four hits.
Mary Baldwin returns to action this Saturday, April 13, with a home doubleheader against N.C. Wesleyan.
