Fighting Squirrels Close Regular Season Against N.C. Wesleyan

STAUNTON, Va – The Mary Baldwin softball team dropped both games in a conference doubleheader against N.C. Wesleyan College, losing the first game 18-3 (5 Inn.) and the second game 8-6 on Saturday afternoon.

The Fighting Squirrels finish 6-28 overall, while the Battling Bishops improved to 20-11 on the season.

In Game 1, Mary Baldwin was led by Madison Cash who broke up a no-hit bid in the fourth inning and went 2-3 with two RBI. Lacey Pugh added a hit and a RBI as well.

N.C. Wesleyan was led by Summer Phillips who went 2-4 with both hits being three-run homers, adding six RBI and two runs scored. Pitcher Beth Braswell excelled in the circle and at the plate hitting two homers, going 3-4 with four RBI and three runs scored and she tossed a complete game, striking out eight and allowing just three hits.

In Game 2, the Battling Bishops opened up the scoring in the second inning when Shelby Godwin reached on an error that allowed Kayla Molivas to score, 1-0. The Fighting Squirrels scored two runs in the third with a two RBI single from Cash to score Lindsay Simmons and Jordan Miller, 2-1.

In the fifth Braswell hit a sacrifice fly to score Nichole Mooney, 2-2. Mary Baldwin answered with a run in the home half of the inning from another Cash single to score Kendall Field, 3-2.

In the sixth, N.C. Wesleyan scored six runs off of five hits, led by a three-run dinger from Braswell, 8-3. The Fighting Squirrels fought back in the bottom of the sixth to score three runs with Pugh hitting a two-run single to bring the final 8-6.

Tomorrow's scheduled contests against Franklin & Marshall has been canceled due to the threat of inclement weather, thus ending the season for the Fighting Squirrels.
