Harrisburg, PA - The Mary Baldwin women's basketball team traveled to Penn State Harrisburg this past weekend and came home with the "Pride. Spirit. Honor. Tournament" trophy after defeating the hosts, 80-64, in Sunday's final. The win brings the Fighting Squirrels to 6-1 in non-conference play and they were led by tournament MVP, Brooke Anders (21 points) and All-Tournament guard, Demet Saygili (22 points). Four players reached double-digit scoring in Sunday's final at the Capital Union Building and Mary Baldwin outscored their opponents 23-15 in the final frame to seal the win.
The Fighting Squirrels opened the tournament with a dominant win against the York College Cardinals, 74-42. Impact players for MBU included senior, Nicole Blackburn (6 points/7 rebounds), and first-year, Leah Calhoun (16 points/7 rebounds/7 assists/6 steals). Hannah Varner made a masssive contribution off the bench with 14 points in 25 minutes of play.
The win set up a tournament final showdown with the hosts for Sunday's final, a tightly contested game until MBU pulled away in the fourth quarter. In addition to the exploits of Anders and Saygili, Blackburn scored 13 points and Calhoun added 14.
