Staunton, Va - Mary Baldwin women's basketball snapped a five-game losing streak on Wednesday night with a last-minute win over N.C. Wesleyan, 66-65. The win brings the Fighting Squirrels to a record of 9-6 as they open a four game homestand to start 2019.
The close matchup between the Fighting Squirrels and the Battling Bishops resulted in the score being tied 14 times throughout the game. The largest lead of the night was held by the Fighting Squirrels when they led by seven points with 2:03 left in the 4th quarter. Leah Calhoun would score the game-winning point when she went to the free throw line with 2.7 seconds left in the game.
Four MBU players combined to score 61 of their 66 points. Rachel Hepler and Nicole Mallon each had 10 points, with Yaya Nedd adding 9 points. First-year phenom Leah Calhoun had a double-double, scoring 32 points with a team-leading 15 rebounds.
The Battling Bishops were led by Kayla Johnson with 13 points, 7 rebounds. Javana Jones added 12 points and Keorra Taylor, 10 points.
The Fighting Squirrels will return to action with a conference matchup on Saturday January 5th at 2 p.m. when they take on Pfeiffer at home.
