Box Score Mary Baldwin College hosted Ferrum College Wednesday evening in a USA South matchup. Ferrum, currently tied for first place in the conference, defeated the Fighting Squirrels 80-56 after leading by only 2 at the half.
Mary Baldwin played intense defense and held a 23-14 advantage on the boards at the half and trailed by only 2, 31-33.
In the second half, the Fighting Squirrels lost their defensive intensity and struggled offensively shooting just 21.6% in the final twenty minutes. The full court press that Ferrum used throughout the game gave the Panthers the advantage they needed as they built their lead. With 10:15 to go, Ferrum led 52-44. In the next minute, Ferrum added 7 points to put the game what seemed out-of-reach 58-44. Both coaches cleared the bench in the final minutes, to give all of their players time in the game.
Freshman Meagan Barron had her first "double-double" of her college career scoring 17 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Junior Kelsey Still led the team in rebounds with 12. Senior Sabrina Desper added 11 points while Shanice Miles scored 9.
Mary Baldwin, now 4-8 (2-6 USA South), will travel to Averett University on Saturday to take on the Cougars at 2:00PM.
