University struggled offensively as the Monarchs outlasted MBC
45-36 in a USA South matchup this afternoon.
The Fighting Squirrels shot just 19.7% making only 3-20
from behind the arc and 7-15 from the charity stripe while
Methodist faired only a little better shooting just over 30%.
At the 16:27 mark, Mary Baldwin had jumped out to a 5-0 lead.
After suffering a drought for the next six minutes, Sabrina
Desper made a layup at 10:04 to give the Fighting Squirrels a 7-3
lead.
Methodist then scored 9 unanswered points to take their first
lead 12-7 at 6:53. A layup by Sabrina Desper tied the game at
14 with 2:48 remaining in the half. The Monarchs answered
with three quick layups and MBC managed to score one more point as
Methodist led 20-15 at the half.
The score remained close in the second half, as the Fighting
Squirrels found themselves down by only two with 5:39 remaining in
the game. The Monarchs outscored Mary Baldwin 7-2 over the
next four minutes. A three point jumper by Shanice Miles at
1:36 was answered with a three point shot by Methodist's Courtney
Woods to seal the win.
Shanice Miles finished with 16 points and 9 rebounds while
Sabrina Desper added 9 points. Junior Kelsey Still grabbed 9
rebounds as Meagan Barron and Shamanda Washington added 7 each.
The Fighting Squirrels will be back at home Wednesday evening as
they host N.C. Wesleyan College. Tip-off is 7:00PM.
