Box Score STAUNTON, VA - The Mary Baldwin College soccer team started the
season with a convincing 4-1 win over Wilson College.
The two teams battled early then MBC quickly took the lead.
Senior Kallie Johnson scored the first goal of the season for the
Fighting Squirrels. Freshman Mayzie Lewis added a second goal
less than a minute later to give MBC a solid 2-0 lead. Five
minutes later, Lewis scored her second goal of her career off of a
pass by Senior Windsor Vaughn. The freshman from Stuarts
Draft added a third goal before the break giving Mary Baldwin a 4-0
lead.
Also, in the first half, the Fighting Squirrels defense held
Wilson to just 3 shots.
MBC's offense went flat in the second half while Wilson
controlled the tempo and outshot the home team 9-1. Wilson
scored their only goal with just under 15 minutes to go in the
game.
Goalie Clarissa Swanerbury prevented the visitors from turning
the game around in the second half finishing with six saves in the
final 45 minutes. She finished the game with 8 total
saves.
Mary Baldwin College improves their record to 1-0 while Wilson
College falls to 0-1. The Fighting Squirrels look for their
second win next week when they travel to Christendom College.
