Box Score STAUNTON, VA - After trailing 30-38 at the half, Averett
University bounced back in the final 20 minutes to take a 77-67 win
over Mary Baldwin College this evening in a USA South Conference
matchup.
The Fighting Squirrels came out strong in the first half
shooting 60% from the floor and 75% from behind the arc. The
home team also held a slight 22-18 rebounding advantage.
Shanice Miles gave Mary Baldwin an 11- point lead with a three
point shot to start the second half, but the Cougars were able to
chip away at the lead and took a 48-47 advantage with just under 7
minutes to go in the half. Then, Averett took advantage of
five critical turnovers by Mary Baldwin and built a six point lead.
Mary Baldwin refused to give up coming back to within two off of
a made free throw by Shanice Miles with 4:50 remaining.
Averett answered with a made jumper and two made free throws
by Oneka Jones and a three point jumper by Nicole Garcia to build
their lead to seven and eventually take the 10 point lead.
Shanice Miles lead Mary Baldwin with a career-high 34 points and
8 rebounds. She was followed by Jazmine Brooks with 13 points
and Dallas Hamlette with a career-high 11 points. Lindsey Poirot
grabbed 12 rebounds for Mary Baldwin.
Mary Baldwin College (0-11, 0-5 USAS) will have little time to
regroup. They host Covenant College Friday afternoon before
finishing the week hosting Maryville on Saturday afternoon.
