Box Score STAUNTON, VA - Mary Baldwin College fell to Covenant College 50-65 this evening in a USA South matchup. The Fighting Squirrels defeated Covenant 37-35 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome the 17 point first half deficit.
Mary Baldwin started slowly shooting just 19% in the first half. The visitors controlled the boards in the first 20 minutes and took advantage of the second chances it created.
The Fighting Squirrels, who have played this week with only six players after losing two starters to injuries, chipped away at Covenant's lead in the second half. Mary Baldwin pulled to within nine at the 6:07 mark with a made free throw from Shanice Miles.
Covenant's Alexis Storteboom then made two free throws and two jump shots to give the visitors a comfortable 13 point advantage. The teams then traded baskets for the final minutes as the Scots were able to hold the lead and take the win on the road.
Senior Shanice Miles again led Mary Baldwin with 18 points while Lindsey Poirot added 12 points and grabbed 17 boards. Precious Parker added 7 rebounds.
Mary Baldwin College (0- 12, 0-6 USAS) play their third game in four days Saturday afternoon when they host Maryville College at 4:00pm.
