Soccer Celebrates Senior Day

Box Score

STAUNTON, VA - The Mary Baldwin College soccer team celebrated Senior Day this afternoon before its final home game of the season.  After honoring the seniors, the Fighting Squirrels took on William Peace University in a USA South matchup.

The teams battled evenly in the first half with neither team able to capitalize on their opportunities until Mari Mitterling found herself open in front of the goal and shot over the goalkeeper's head to put the visitors ahead 1-0.

As the clock ran out in the first half, Mary Baldwin held a 10-9 shot advantage while Peace held a 3-1 corner kick advantage.

The teams continued to battle in the second half.  At the 77:24 minute mark, Mayzie Lewis tied the game for the Fighting Squirrels when she dodged a defender and got a clear shot about 10 yards out.

It appeared that the game would go into overtime when Katie Hodges scored the winning goal at the 88:36 minute mark for the Pacers.  The visitors scored their final goal with just 10 seconds to play giving Peace the 3-1 win.

Mary Baldwin College, 2-13-0 (0-11 USAS), play their final game of the season next Wednesday at Greensboro College.
