Box Score STAUNTON, VA - The Mary Baldwin College basketball team fell to
Hollins University 58-39 in their home opener this evening.
The Fighting Squirrels trailed Hollins by just two points six
minutes into the game. In the next four minutes, Hollins went
on a 8-2 run to lead 17-9.
For the next four minutes, the teams traded baskets. Then,
Auburn Smith sank a three point shot that started Hollins on a 9-3
run to finish the first half and take a 13 point lead into the
locker room.
Mary Baldwin controlled the boards in the first half
outrebounding Hollins 24-13. But, the home team didn't take
care of the basketball and committed 18 turnovers in the first 20
minutes.
The two teams battled evenly in the second half but the Fighting
Squirrels couldn't overcome the first half deficeit.
Turnovers cost Mary Baldwin the game. Hollins took
advantage of the errors scoring 30 points off of Mary Baldwin
turnovers. Mary Baldwin also failed to convert at the charity
stripe in the second half making just 3 of 16 attempts.
Kaybria Johnson finished the game with a double-double scoring
13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Von Redmond added 9
points. Teanna Peavy grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
Jewellanna Parfitt led Hollins with 15 points. Britney
Campbell and Auburn Smith added 12 points each.
Mary Baldwin College 0-3 travel to Piedmont College on Sunday to
play their USA South Conference opener. Tip-off is noon.
