Averett Pulls Away in Second Half

Box Score

DANVILLE, VA - A balanced scoring attack helped Averett University defeat Mary Baldwin College 68-48 this evening in a USA South matchup.

The Cougar's jumped out to a six point lead but the Fighting Squirrels came back and tied the game at 11:28 with an old-fashioned three-point-play by Lindsey Poirot.  The teams then traded the lead for the remainder of the half with Averett pulling ahead in the last minute.

The final 20 minutes proved to be all Averett, as the Cougars took advantage of four Mary Baldwin turnovers to build their lead to 9 points in the first three minutes.  Then, three consecutive baskets behind the arc and a jumper built their lead to 17 in the next three minutes.

The home team continued to roll in the second half, taking advantage of 15 Mary Baldwin turnovers. For the game, Averett scored 30 points off of the visitors errors.

Senior Shanice Miles and sophomore Jazmine Brooks led Mary Baldwin with 17 points each while Lindsey Poirot grabbed 14 rebounds.

Averett University was led by Jessica Myers who shot 50% from behind the arc and finished with 12 points.

Mary Baldwin College (0-20, 0-14 USAS) will host William Peace University on Saturday as they celebrate Senior Day.
