Shanice Miles Breaks 1000 Points in Final Game

Box Score

FAYETTEVILLE, NC -  Senior Shanice Miles scored the 1000th point of her three-year career this afternoon in her final game at Methodist University.

The senior from Buckingham, VA scored 362 in her first season at MBC, 213 in her second season, and needed just 38 points this weekend to reach the milestone.

Miles scored a career-high 37 points on Senior Day to bring her within reach.

On Saturday, Miles scored 21 points against N.C. Wesleyan leaving her with just 17 points remaining.

The moment came with 12:37 to go in the second half when Miles sank a three-point shot to pull Mary Baldwin to within 17.

Mary Baldwin led early in the first half 9-8.  The Monarchs then went on a 13-0 run in the next three minutes to take a commanding 21-9 lead with just under 11 minutes to play.  The Monarchs built slightly on that lead holding a 34-19 advantage at the half.

Both teams came out in the second half scoring, but the Fighting Squirrels were never able to overcome the first half deficit and fell to Methodist 49-74.

Shanice Miles led Mary Baldwin with 25 points shooting 5-12 (41.7%) from behind the arc.  She was followed by Jazmine Brooks with 15 points while Miles, Shantelle Jennings, and Tiara Habeebullah grabbed 5 rebounds each.

I asked Head Coach Nikki Maples about Shanice's accomplishment today.  She said, "One of the best moments this year was watching the joy on Shanice's face when she sank the bucket to reach 1,000 points.  Everyone on the team was ecstatic when she hit a three to put her at 1,002.  A quick timeout was called and hugs were spread all around.  I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to coach Shanice.  She is very talented and I am excited to see where she goes after graduation."

Shanice Miles finishes her career with 1,008 points which places her 10th in total career points at Mary Baldwin College.

When I asked Shanice about today, she shared with me one of her favorite quotes. "Shoot for the moon.  Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars."

Great advice for all of us.  Congratulations Shanice!
