Box Score 2 HARRISONBURG, VA - The Mary Baldwin College volleyball team
opened their season this afternoon at the Eastern Mennonite
University Invitational Tournament. The Fighting Squirrels
fell to Catholic University in their first match 0-3 and Salem
College in their second match 1-3.
Errors cost the young Fighting Squirrels their first match
against Catholic as the team combined for 26 attack errors along
with a number of serve and receive errors.
Katelyn Rice led Mary Baldwin with 7 kills. She was
followed closely by Kennedy Quick with 6. Reilly Kelly added
18 assists while Xenna Belfield finished with 8 diggs.
Mary Baldwin had a very close match against Salem in their final
match of the afternoon losing 25-27, 25-22, 19-25, and 15-25.
After losing a very close first set, the Fighting Squirrels came
back to take the second 25-22. The teams played evenly, with
Salem only taking a slight advantage finishing with 44 kills to
Mary Baldwin's 41. Salem did finish with a slight advantage
in service aces and five fewer receive errors which proved to be
the difference.
Kately Rice again led Mary Baldwin with 14 kills. She was
once again followed by Kennedy Quick with 10. Setter Reilly
Kelly led with 33 assists while Xenna Belfield led the defense with
31 diggs.
Mary Baldwin (0-2, 0-0 USAS) will be back in action tomorrow at
10:00am against Goucher before finishing play against Hood at 2:00
PM.
