Box Score 2 SALEM, VA- The Fighting Squirrels Volleyball Team continued
their two day tournament at Roanoke College today. They faced
Randolph College this morning and Roanoke College this
afternoon.
In the first match, the Squirrels struggled early giving Randolph
the 9-25 first set win. Mary Baldwin came back in set two but
their efforts feel short as Randolph went up 2-0 with a 25-22
win. The Wildcats continued to roll in set three winning the
set 25-11 and the match 3-0.
Freshman Xenna Belfield led the team in digs while sophomore
Reilly Kelly had 11 assists. Katie Rice, Sophomore Jessica Hickman,
and Freshman Kennedy Quick totaled 16 kills with 6, 5, and 5
respectively.
The second match had Mary Baldwin facing Roanoke College. After an
hour delay the Fighting Squirrels faced hard competition and lost
in 3 sets (5-25, 13-25, and 15-25).
Katie Rice led the team with 10 kills and contributed on defense
with 10 digs. Reilly Kelly had 16 of the 17 assists. Xenna Belfield
led the team in digs with 15.
Head Coach Paul Yee said, "Today was tough for our young team. We
had difficulties maintaining our composure and even though we did
some good things in both matches we still have a way to go but we
are making progress every day."
The Fighting Squirrels Volleyball Team starts conference play this
week with a trip to Greensboro College on Thursday.
