Box Score GREENSBORO, NC - The Mary Baldwin College volleyball team opened
their USA South Conference play this evening against Greensboro
College.
The Fighting Squirrels took the first set 25-17 with their best
offensive performance this season. The team finished the
first set with 12 kills while making only 3 errors.
Errors cost Mary Baldwin the second set as Greensboro came
roaring back to tie the match at 1-1. Leading just 7-6, the
Pride went on a 8-0 run to take a commanding 15-6 lead. A
couple of errors by the home team briefly brought Mary Baldwin back
into the game. Greensboro then sealed the win with a 10-2
run.
In the third set, Greensboro jumped out to an early 11-2 lead
behind Holly Anders 4 service aces. The home team then rolled
to a 25-13 win.
The two teams battled to a 9-9 fourth set start. The Pride
then pulled away when Megan Baranko gave her team a 16-9 lead with
three service aces. Katelyn Rice tried to bring the Fighting
Squirrels back with three kills down the stretch but Mary Baldwin
fell short 19-25.
Katelyn Rice led Mary Baldwin with 13 kills. She was
followed by Kennedy Quick with 8 kills and Farrah Fullerton with
6. Defensively, Xenna Belfield led the team with 14
digs. Rice added 9.
Mary Baldwin College (0-11, 0-1 USAS) will travel back to
Greensboro this Saturday to take on William Peace and North
Carolina Wesleyan College in a USA South quad match.
