Box Score SALEM, NC - Mary Baldwin College fell to Salem College 67-71 in women's basketball this evening.
The Fighting Squirrels jumped out to a 24-12 lead after the first quarter behind Kaybria Johnson's 10 points. The Fighting Squirrels shot 50% from the floor including 60% from beyond the arc.
Salem came back in the second quarter to edge Mary Baldwin 20-17 but trailed at the half 31-42.
The Spirits then went on a 15-1 run to start the second half and swung the momentum in their favor.
With the two teams tied with six minutes remaining, Precious Parker sank a jump shot to give Mary Baldwin the advantage. Salem answered with 4:15 on the clock to once again tie the game. Salem then sank the next two baskets before Kaybria Johnson pulled Mary Baldwin to within two with 1:32 reminaing.
As the clock ticked down, the Fighting Squirrels were unable to score while Salem sank two free throws to hang on to win 71-67.
Salem's inside game proved to be the difference as the Spirits outrebounded Mary Baldwin 51-37 and also scored 42 points in the paint compared to Mary Baldwin's 22 points in the paint.
Salem was led by Quntashea Lewis who scored 26 points and grabbed 19 rebounds.
Mary Baldwin College was led by Kaybria Johnson who scored a season-high 30 points. Johnson also grabbed 8 rebounds. Rakeema Willis added 10 points while Teanna Peavy tallied 7 rebounds.
Mary Baldwin College 0-20, (0-11 USA South) is on the road this weekend. The Fighting Squirrels take on NC Wesleyan on Saturday and William Peace Sunday afternoon.
