Box Score 2 ROANOKE, VA - The Mary Baldwin University volleyball team finished 3rd this afternoon at the Maroon Classic at Roanoke College.
Mary Baldwin fell to eventual champion Roanoke College in the first match of the day 0-3 (17-25, 14-25, 7-25).
In the first set, Roanoke jumped out to a 5-0 lead then built a 10-1 advantage. Mary Baldwin stormed back to trail 17-21, but Roanoke held on to win 25-17. In the second set, Roanoke steadily built their lead taking the 25-14 win. Roanoke dominated the third set to earn their berth into the finals.
Xenna Belfield led the defense with 12 digs. The offense was led by Katelyn Rice with 7 kills. Reilly Kelly added 16 assists.
Mary Baldwin defeated Hollins University in the consolation game 3-2 (25-17, 27-25, 21-25, 13-25, 15-11).
Katelyn Rice again led the offense for Mary Baldwin tallying 21 kills. Jessica Hickman and Farrah Fullerton added 12 and 11 kills respectively. Reilly Kelly finished with 34 assists. The defense was again led by Xenna Belfield who tallied 24 digs.
Head Coach Paul Yee said, "We competed well this weekend and got some more things in place technically and tactically. We are working on playing more composed when we face better serving and hitting."
Mary Baldwin University, 3-5, host Bridgewater College Tuesday, September 20 in their next match.
