Fighting Squirrels Drop Close Game to Conference Contenders

Staunton, Va. - Mary Baldwin women's basketball fell short to the Lady Cougars of Averett University in a hard fought 70-66 loss at the PAC on Saturday afternoon. It was the Fighting Squirrels third conference game of the season, moving them to 7-3 on the season and 1-2 in USA South conference play. The Fighting Squirrels had three players score in double digits and six players contribute to the scoring.

The home team outshot the Lady Cougars 37% to 31% from the field and 47% to 42% from behind the arc. The Lady Cougars outrebounded the Fighting Squirrels 48-29, which proved to be a huge contributing factor to the loss.

Mary Baldwin was led by first-year, Brooke Anders, who had 17 points, shooting 3-of-4 from the three-point line. Demet Saygili and Leah Calhoun both raked in 15 points for MBU and Nicole Mallon had a team-leading 12 rebounds.

The Lady Cougars were led by Alexis Roccia, who had 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. Brooke Carthon produced a double-double for Averett, scoring 15 points and pulling in 10 rebounds.

The Fighting Squirrels will now travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on the Avenging Angels of Meredith College on Saturday, December 15th at 2pm.
