Women's Soccer Defeated by N.C. Wesleyan

STAUNTON, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University women's soccer team returned to action in a 6-2 loss to N.C. Wesleyan at SMA Worth Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Fighting Squirrels fall to 3-7 overall with an 0-2 mark in league play, while the Battling Bishops improve to 3-6-1 on the season behind a 2-1 conference record.

Sarah Cook scored the first goal of the game for the Bishops in the 16th minute, 1-0, before Cydney Nichols doubled the lead at the 26:17 mark. Cook netted his second goal of the contest just before half as NCWC held a 3-0 advantage at the recess.

Kristel Thompson made the score 4-0 in the 65th minute after knocking home a corner kick by Cook. Makayla Taylor finally broke the scoreless drought after taking a free kick from Annie Ammons, 4-1. Claire Bailey scored just five minutes later and Manuela Cano gave the Bishops a 6-1 lead before Elena Guy finished the scoring with a goal in the 90th minute.

Anyka Wilkin recorded 10 saves in the loss, while Alicia Jacobs pushed aside five shots.

The Bishops held a 30-12 edge in shots, while each side attempted three corner kicks.

The Fighting Squirrels are back in action tomorrow, Oct. 6, against Methodist beginning at 12 pm.
