Box Score 2 The Mary Baldwin volleyball team dropped a pair of home matches Saturday in conference action, losing to William Peace and Meredith.
The Squirrels lost to William Peace in the first match of the day 26-24, 25-13, 25-18 and then fell to Meredith in three straight 25-16, 25-16, 25-9.
A Sydney Clarke kill pulled MBU yo within a point, 23-22, in the first set against William Peace before a kill by Landis Lemon gave Peace a 24-22 lead. MBU pulled even at 24-24 on kills by Emily Link and Hannah Myers, but the Pacers closed out the first set with the next two points for a 26-24 win.
After the Pacers controlled the second set to lead 2-0, the Squirrels jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the third set. MBU led until the Pacers pulled even at 11-11. A kill by Clarke kept the score tied at 12-12, but Peace scored the next two points to take the lead, 14-12, and then held off the Squirrels the rest of the way to close out the match.
Rachel Christian led MBU with 12 kills against William Peace and Clarke added eight kills. Emily Link finished with 28 assists and Soleil Rios Rolon had 14 digs.
MBU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set with Meredith behind a kill by Christian and a block by Savannah Figueroa. Meredith moved ahead 6-5 before Clarke evend the score with a kill. The Squirrels trailed by just two 10-8 before Meredith went on a 7-3 run to pull away to a 17-11 lead en route to winning the first set 25-16.
A kill by Figueroa had the Squirrells within a point, 10-9 in the second set, but once again a Meredith spurt, this time a 6-1 run, moved the visitors ahead 16-10. Meredith closed out the second set 25-16 and carried the momentum into the third set, closing out the match with a 25-9 win.
Clarke led the Squirrels at the net with 10 kills. Christian had eight digs and Link added 21 assists.
Mary Baldwin returns to action Tuesday with a trip to Greensboro.
