Mary Baldwin Shuts Out Greensboro In First-Round Tournament Victory

Mary Baldwin defeated Greensboro College, 2-0, Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the USA South Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament.

The Squirrels were playing in the conference tournament for the first itme in program history,

MBU scored its first goal in the 12th minute. Annie Ammons pushed a pass ahead to Quierra Hawkins near the top of the box. Hawkins used one touch to work free from her defender and then beat the goalie with a shot inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.

The Squirrels scored again in the 37th minute and this time Hawkins was on the giving end of the scoring play. Hawkins' long pass ahead found Isabelle Fraher making a strong run down the right side. Fraher took the pass in stride and carried the ball toward the center of the box. She beat the keeper with a high shot just under the cross bar, making the score 2-0.

The MBU defense did its job in the second half, limiting the Pride to just three shots on goal to preserve the 2-0 victory.

MBU goalie Anyka Wilkin earned the shutout by recording eight saves.

Mary Baldwin, now with a 9-6-2 record this season, finished Tuesday's contest with a 19-12 advantage in total shots and a slim 3-2 edge in corner kicks. The Squirrels put 10 of their 19 shots on goal.

 
MBU advances to the quarterfinals on Saturday and will travel to play Piedmont, the No. 1 seed in the West Division of USA South.
