Late Goals Lift MBU Past Averett

Box Score

Mary Baldwin scored two goals in the final 20 minutes Wednesday afternoon to come from behind and defeat Averett, 2-1, in USA South Athletic Conference women's soccer action.

Averett tallied first when high-scoring freshman Celia de Diego ran down a long pass from Thania Hernandez and scored on a shot from the right side that nestled into the net just inside the far post, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute of action. The Cougars held the 1-0 lead until the 71st minute when Isabelle Fraher slid a pass across the box and Shea Rider deposited the ball into the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season to tie he score at 1-1.

With less than two minutes left to play in regulation a pass glanced off MBU's Sam Manfre and Annie Ammons controlled the loose ball and scored the game-winner from the top of the box. The goal was No. 7 this season for Ammons.

Mary Baldwin, now 6-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference, is back in action Saturday when the Sqyirrels host N.C. Wesleyan.
