Volleyball Picks Up First Conference Win

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Mary Baldwin picked up its first conference win of the season Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Salem in a USA South Athletic Conference quad volleyball match.

MBU lost its first match of the day to Pfeiffer 3-1 (25-14, 25-12, 23-25, 25-21) but the Squirrels rebounded to defeat Salem in four sets 25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23.

In the first set against Salem, Mary Baldwin jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never trailed. The Squirrels led by at least four points the rest of the set.

After the Spirits won the second set to even the match, MBU scored the first two points of the third set and never trailed to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, Salem got off to the quick start, putting the Squirrels in an 11-3 hole. MBU chipped away at the margin and eventually pulled even on an ace from Sydney Clarke, tying hte contest at 20-20. Rachel Christian put down a kill for a 21-20 MBU lead and the Squirrels closed out the fourth set 25-23 to win the mach.

Christian finished with 17 kills and 12 digs. Clarke matched Christian's offensive output with 17 kills. Hannah Myers added 13 kills and led the team with four blocks. Soleil Rios Rolon paced the Squirrels with 20 digs while teammate Savannah Figueroa added 13 digs. Kate Rudolph directed the offense with 53 assists.

In MBU's opening match of the day, Pfeiffer controlled action in the first two sets, but MBU stayed alive by claiming the thrd set.

The Squirrels pulled even in the third set at 15-15 on an ace by Clarke and the scored was tied at 16-16, 17-17 and 18-18 before a kill by Christian and and ace from Rolon put MBU up by two points, 20-18. A kill and an ace by Christian put the Squirrels ahead 22-19 and MBU closed out the set 25-23, with an ace by Alexis Edmonds.

The Falcons regained control in the fourth set, leading all the way in taking a 25-21 victory to close out the match.

Clarke led the Eagles with 16 kills against Pfeiffer. Christian added 14 kills and  Edmonds finished with 10. Rolon had 20 digs to lead the Squirrels and Rudolph added a team-high 32 assists.

MAry Baldwin is back in action Wednesday evening when the Squirrels tavel ot Averett.
