MBU Drops Season-Opener At Gettysburg In Overtime

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Mary Baldwin men's basketball team played the first game in program history Friday evening and came up just short in a 91-84 overtime loss to Gettysburg College on the first night of the Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament.

The Bullets shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half and opened up a 40-24 lead on the Fighting Squirrels.

Gettysburg led by as many as 21 points in the second half, A 3-pointer by Colin Farrell with 11:15 left to play put the home team up 62-41, matching the Bullets' largest lead of the game.

MBU started to chip a way at the deficit and trimmed the margin back to single digits, 58-50, on a 3-pointer by Jaden Ignacio with 5:11 left to play. Another 3-pointer by Ignacio and a layup by Tyler Thomas made it a one-possession game. 58-55, at the 4:38 mark. After a missed shot by the Bullets, Vernon Fraley was fouled and made both foul shots to pull the Squirrels to within a point, 68-67. Ignacio then came away with a steal and that led to a pair of made free throws by Quentin Hart, giving MBU the lead, 69-68. with 3:32 remaining. Hart's free throws capped a  13-0 Mary Baldwin run.

The Squirrels led 76-75 after Fraley hit two foul shots with 34 seconds remaining. Gettysburg's Elijah Williams was fouled with 16 seconds left and made his first foul shot to tie the score. Williams missed the second free throw and Fraley grabbed the rebound, giving the Squirrels a chance to win in regulation. Thomas missed from 3-point range with six seconds left and the Bullets controlled the rebound and called timeout. Fraley came up with a steal following the timeout to send the game to overtime.

Williams opened the extra period with a 3-pointer and the Bullets led the rest of the way. Hart sandwiched two buckets around a layup by Gettysburg's Avery Close to keep MBU within a point, 81-80, before bucekts by Close and Farrell pushed the Bullets' lead to 85-80.

Three Squirrels hit the 20-point mark, led by Hart with 21. Ignacio and Fraley each finished with 20 points. Fraley also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

The Squirrels return to action Saturday when they play Penn State-Abington, a 66-63 loser to Hiram College in Saturday's other contest.
