MBU Men Notch First Victory In Program History

Box Score

The Mary Baldwin men's basketball team defeated Southern Virginia, 77-67, Tuesday night for the first victory in program history. MBU outscored the Knights 9-0 in the final three minutes to seal the historic victory.

Much like the first five games of the season, Tuesday's contest was close throughout.

Mary Baldwin closed the first half with a 5-0 run as Quentin Hart knocked down a 3-pointer to snap a 34-34 tie and then Brett Asbury added two foul shots, giving the Squirrels a 39-34 lead at the break.

The lead did not last long as the Knights opened the second half with a 9-0 fluury in the first two minutes to take a 43-39 lead.

Mary Baldwin absorbed the early blow and regained the lead with 15:21 remaining when Brandon Stoudamire scored inside off a nifty pass in traffic by Tyler Thomas, putting the Squirrels up 50-49.

The Squirrels led the rest of the game with the lead fluctuating between two and five points until SVU's Elliott Spencer hit a 3-pointer to trim the MBU lead to one point, 64-63, with 6:24 left to play.

The margin was still a single point, 68-67, when SVU guard Conner Marchant scored on a driving laup with 3:22 left in the contest. That turned about to the the Knights' final points as Mary Baldwin closed with a 9-0 run to take the victory.

A jumper by Zach Fullagar gave MBU a three-point lead, 70-67, and moments later Fullagar provided the dagger when he drilled a long 3-pointer, making the score 73-67 with just 36 seconds left on the clock. Asbury and Hart each hit two free throws in the closing seconds to put the finishing touches on the 77-67 victory.

The Fighting Squirrels placed six players in double figures, led by Asbury who came off the bench to score 16 points. Vernon Fraley had a big night with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Stoudamire and Fullagar both finished with 11 points while teammates Jaden Ignacio and Hart scored 10 points apiece.

MBU is now 1-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Squirrels return to action Friday night when they host the Apprentice School in non-conference action.
