Mary Baldwin Holds On For Second Victory

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. - Mary Baldwin's Tyler Thomas hit a 3-pointer with 33 seconds left to give the Fighting Squirrels a 74-71 lead Sunday and MBU held on in the closing seconds to defeat Shenandoah, 74-73. The victory was the second of the season for Mary Baldwin.

The game was nip-and-tucjkfrom the opening tip with the largest lead of the game a five-point advantage for MBU midway through the first half.

A 3-pointer by Davion Roberts put the Hornets up by three, 67-64, with 4:17 left, but Thomas answered with a jumper to pull MBU to within a point, 67-66. Jaylen Williams made 1-of-2 foul shots for a two-point SU lead before two free throws by Quentin Hart pulled the Squirrels even at 68-68. After Shenandoah missed two shots on its next possession, MBU's Brett Asbury was fouled and made 1-of-2 at the line for a 69-68 Squirrels' lead with 2:04 left to play.

Roberts made 1-of-2 foul shots to pull Shenandoah even, but Thomas went to the line and knocked down two foul shots for a 71-69 Mary Baldwin lead with 1:10 left in the game.

After Shenandoah's Williams tied the score with a jumper, Thomas hit what proved to be the game-winning 3-pointer with 33 seconds left, giving Mary Baldwin a 74-71 lead.

Roberts responded with a quick jumper to trim the MBU lead to a single point and the Hornets fouled Mary Baldwin point guard Jaden Ignacio with 20 second left. Ignacio, shooting 90 percent from the foul line, missed both foul shots and the Hornets controlled the rebound.

Roberts' potential game-wining 3-pointer with three seconds left was off target and Thomas grabbed the rebound for the Squirrels to preserve the 74-73 non-conference victory.

Thomas led the Squirrels with 18 points, scoring 12 of his points in the second half, including Mary Baldwin's final five points of the game. Brandon Stoudamire added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds for Mary Baldwin and Hart finished with 12 points.

The Squirrels, now 2-7 on the season, return to action on Dec. 29 when they host Hampden-Sydney.
