Box Score The Mary Baldwin women's soccer team lost to Averett on Thursday, 2-1.
MBU (1-2, 1-2 USA South) had a few early chances off of shots from Juliana Franco and Annie Ammons.
In the 21st minute, Ammons played a through ball to Shea Rider whose shot was just tipped by Averett's goalkeeper Morgan Dillis, as she came off her line.
The same sequence of events happened in the 31st minute, but this time Alyson Kinkopf, who subbed in for Dillis, made a sliding save before Rider was able to get much power behind her shot.
A minute later Averett (1-5, 1-5) got on the board, as Clarice Peters played a through ball to Madison Morin who one-timed it into the bottom left corner.
The Fighting Squirrels last chance before the half came from Neriam Melendez off a shot that caused little trouble for Kinkopf.
The game paused for an hour and a half due to rain before the second half finally began.
In the 58th minute, MBU had another breakaway chance but Ammons shot would again be saved.
Shortly after Averett had a breakaway chance of their own, but a diving save by Anyka Wilkin steered the ball wide for what would be one of her seven saves in the game.

In the 80th minute, the Fighting Squirrels cut the lead in half as Ammons broke free and got past Kinkopf to place it in the wide-open net.
MBU's only chance after that was a long-distance shot by Ammons that landed much wide of the net as the Fighting Squirrels comeback attempt fell short.
Mary Baldwin's next game is on March 23 as they head to Methodist for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
