Fighting Squirrels Pick Up First Win; Go 1-1 on the Day.

 The Mary Baldwin women's tennis team defeated Ferrum 8-1 on Sunday to pick up its first win of the season.

The win also marked MBU's first in over four years and first under head coach Chris Stambaugh, who is in his second full season leading MBU.

In singles play, the Fighting Squirrels earned an 8-3 win by Alexis Seymore at No. 1, and Lauren Hodgkins (No. 2) Liz Wine (No. 3) and Samantha Childs (No. 5) each taking home 8-4 victories.  Helen Gutierrez topped it off with a 8-7 win at No. 6

The No. 1 doubles team of Seymore and Hodgkins teamed up for an 8-2 win. Additionally, Summer Wendt and Wine took an 8-2 win at No. 2, while Childs and Gutierrez pulled out an 8-7 victory at No. 3.

 In match two, MBU faced off against Meredith in a USA South matchup.

The Fighting Squirrels sole win came from Gutierrez who won 8-4 at No. 6 singles.

At No. 1 singles Seymore dropped at 6-0, 6-0 decision while Hodgkins fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Wine put up a hard fought battle at No. 3 but fell short, taking a 6-4, 6-3 defeat.

Seymore and Hodgkins dropped an 8-1 decision at No. 1 doubles while Wendt and Jada Smith fell 8-1 at No. 2 and Childs and Helen Gutierrez lost 8-3 at No. 3.

The Fighting Squirrels next match is on April 17 as they host Pfeiffer at 1:00 p.m.
