Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. - The Mary Baldwin volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday on Day 2 of the Roanoke College Maroon Classic.
The Squirrels played Ranolph College in its first game Saturday and were looking to avenge a five-set loss to the WildCats earlier this season.
The WildCats rolled to the first set win, but MBU came out strong in the second set and led 13-7. The Cats then reeled off eight consecutive points to overtake MBU by a score of 15-13. The Squirrels fought back and a kill by Alexis Edmonds and an attack error by the WildCats put MBU up 20-18. The score was tied 23-23 after a kill by Megan Andrews, but Randolph College scored the final two points for a 25-23 win and a two-set lead.
In the third set, Mary Baldwin opened up a 17-12 lead and held off the WildCats to stay in the match. The Cats closed to with two points, 23-21, but a kill by Edmonds and an attack error by Randolph College gave the Squirrels the win in the third set.
Mary Baldwin was on the brink of forcing a fifth set when a kill by Edmonds moved the Squirrels to set point in the fourth set with a 25-24 lead. The WildCats then reeled off three straight points to close out the match with a 27-25 win in the fourth set.
Sydney Clarke led MBU in kills with 15 and digs with 12. Edmonds had a strong all-around game with nine kills, give aces and four blocks. Kate Rudolph paced the team with 20 assists.
In Saturday's second contest Ferrum College swept the Squirrels 25-19, 25-14, 25-15. Rachel Christian paced the attak with seven kills while Soleil Rios Rolon led MBU with nine digs. Ruddolph finished with nine assists.
Mary Baldwin, now 3-5 on the season, returns to action Wednesday evening at Eastern Mennonite.
