Rider's Last-Minute Goal Lifts MBU To Win

Box Score

Mary Baldwin's Shea Rider scored with just 30 seconds left in regulation Tuesday to lift the Fighting Squirrels to a 2-1 USA South conference victory over Southern Virginia.

After a scoreless first half, the Squirrels got on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 60th minute. MBU was awarded a free kick from the left side and Sam Manfre sent the ball into the box. The ball bounced off MBU's Cyanne Harkins and Rider cleaned up the loose ball with a clear shot to the goal for a 1-0 MBU lead.

The Mnights tied the score 10 minutes later on a goal from close range by Kassaundra Gorton.

The contest appeared destined for overrime when Rider found the back of the net from 20 yards out for the game-winning goal.

The Knights held a 9-6 edge in total shots and a slim 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

MBU keeper Anyka Wilkin recorded four saves to earn the win.

Mary Baldwin, now 5-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in USA South, is back in action Saturday when the Squirrels host Methodist in conference action.
