Box Score Mary Baldwin scored the final five points of the game Wednesday afternoon to defeat the Greensboro College Pride, 81-74, in USA South Athletic Conference action.
MBU led 43-38 at the half, but the second half turned into a back-and-forth affair. The score was tied four times and the lead changed hands 10 times in the first 13 minutes of the second half. The final lead changed occurred with 7:08 remaining when MBU's Tyler Thomas scored on a layup, putting the Squirrels ahead 59-58. That was the start of an 8-0 spurt that gave MBU a 65-58 lead.
MBU took its biggest lead of the half when Brett Asbury drove inside for a layup, making the score 74-65 with 2:19 left. The Pride battled back with a 9-2 run that made it a two-point game. Two foul shots by Kevon Meertins with 46 seconds left in the game pulled the Pride to within 76-74. MBU's Asbury responded with a 3-point play, giving the Fighting Squirrels a 79-74 lead with 31 seconds remaining. After a Greensboro missed shot, Asbury added a bucket with just 20 seconds left for the final 81-74 score.
MBU placed five players in double figures. Vernon Fraley led the way with 21 points and Asbury added 17. Thomas tallied 14 points, followed by Quentin Hart with 11 points and Brandon Stoudamire with 10.
Mary Baldwin is now 4-8 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Squirrels are back in action Friday evening when they host N,C, Wesleyan.
