Box Score Mary Baldwin upset North Carolina Wesleyan College, 91-74, Friday evening. N.C. Wesleyan entered the game with a 14-3 record and a 5-1 record in the USA South East Division, good for a tie for first place with Averett.
Mary Baldwin led 50-46 at half and outscored the visitors 41-28 in the second half to pull away for the victory. In the first half, the Squirrels used the long ball to carve out a lead, making 8-of-15 shots from 3-point range.
MBU opened the second half with a 14-4 spurt to lead 64-50 and led by at least nine points the rest of the way. The Squirrels shot 63.3 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes, making 19-of-30 field goal atempts.
Brandon Stoudamire led the Fighting Squirrels with 23 points. Stoudamire made 11-of-15 shots from the floor. Tyler Thomas added 19 points and seven assists, followed by Vernon Fraley with 14 points and Quentin Hart with 12. Damon McDowell scored 26 to lead the Bishops.
For the game,, MBU blistered the nets at a 56.7 percent clip, making 38-of-67 shots from the floor.
Mary Baldwin is now 5-8 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The victory was the third in a row for the Fighting Squirrels. MBU is back in action Saturday afternoon at home against Methodist.
