Quentin Hart poured in a game-high 20 points, hitting four of the team's nine three-point shots, and added six rebounds and two steals in leading the Fighting Squirrels to an 81-57 non-conference men's basketball victory over visiting Bridgewater Wednesday. It was the season-opening game for both teams.
Sophomore guard
Zach Sloan also knocked down 19 points, hitting 7-for-10 from the field (3-for-3 from long range) and contributed a team-leading four steals as the Fighting Squirrels won their season-opener for the first time in the three-year history of the program.
Other double-digit scoring contributors for the hosts were sophomore guard
Logan Barbour (13 points) and classmate Mekhi Reed (12 points). Sophomore center
Luke Ogle added eight points, three blocked shots and shared team-high rebounding honors with senior point guard
Jaden Ignacio, each with seven caroms.
The teams were tied 9-9 at the first media time out, then MBU scored 11-straight points to ignite a 19-2 run over a span of 6:15 to gain a 28-11 lead. Sloan, Barbour and Ignacio drained long-range shots during the run. The Fighting Squirrels took a 44-22 lead to the mid-game break.
Bridgewater, led by 16 points from Landon Hawes and a double-double from Alec Topper (15 points, 10 rebounds), cut into MBU's lead several times in the last 20 minutes, but never got within single digits as the hosts cruised to the win.
The Fighting Squirrels' next outing is Wednesday (11/15) in the friendly confines of the MBU PAC against Washington & Lee, beginning at 7 p.m.
