Randolph College took a two-goal lead in the second half and held off Mary Baldwin's late rally in a 2-1 victory over the Fighting Squirrels Wednesday at SMA Worth Field. Randolph improves to 4-0 for the season while MBU falls to 1-3-1.
After a scoreless first half, Randolph's Alana Ellis scored a penalty kick goal and assisted on what proved to be the deciding goal, both within a five-minute span, to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
MBU's
Shea Rider cut the lead in half with a drive toward goal from the left side, punching the ball into the net from a scramble in front of the goal, for her first goal of the season, 14th of her career. Minutes later, she sent a ball through the goal mouth in an effort to tie the game, but it rolled wide and the Wildcats held on to win.
Maddy Vinson registered two saves in a scoreless first half while
Lauren Lasher had six saves in the final 45 minutes for MBU.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action Saturday with a non-conference match at Randolph-Macon College, beginning at 4 p.m.
