Alexis Edmonds had a strong all-around game Tuesday against Hollins, recording nine kills and a .250 hitting percentage, four solo blocks, six digs, three service aces and a dig, to lead the Fighting Squirrels to their first win of the season by a 3-2 count.
Despite missing several starters and full-time players, the Fighting Squirrels improved to 1-3 for the season by downing Hollins, 25-17, 17-25, 13-25, 25-22 and 15-8.
MBU drew contributions from throughout the lineup. Sophomore
Hanna Roach had 11 of the team's 39 kills. Freshman
Delaney Bolbach added eight kills, four digs and an ace. Junior Sol Rios Rolon chipped in seven kills and 14 digs. Freshman
Josie Sheets quarterbacked the offense with 32 assists and had 20 digs, both team high numbers. Classmate
Jaisley Tibayan added 18 assists.
Hollins was paced by Selena Wolfe with a match-best 13 kills while Sophia Maurer added 10 kills, 10 digs and four service aces and Jaelyn Werley contributed 38 assists, nine digs, three aces and two solo blocks.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action at the Shenandoah Tournament this weekend. Friday, MBU opens tournament play against the host Hornets (3:30 p.m.), followed by a showdown against Hood (5:30 p.m.). Saturday, the Fighting Squirrels challenge Misericordia (10:30 a.m.) and Gallaudet (12:30 p.m.).
