Hampden-Sydney scored four goals in the last 16 minutes of the first half on the way to a 5-0 non-conference men's soccer victory over Mary Baldwin at SMA Worth Field Friday.
In a game moved up three hours because of the threat of inclement weather, the teams were scoreless until the 30th minute, when a H-S crossing pass from the right corner into the goal mouth deflected off an MBU defender into the back of the net for an own goal. Hampden-Sydney then broke loose for three goals in the next 12 minutes for a 4-0 halftime advantage.
Early in the second half, the match was delayed for just under an hour by a storm that passed through the edge of the Staunton area. Upon the return to action, Emory Davis re-directed a ball through the goal mouth inside the left post to complete the 5-0 victory. The match ended early when another round of lightning and thunder was detected in the area.
Hampden-Sydney outshot the hosts by a 13-2 margin. MBU starting keeper
Tucker Speak was credited with three saves in 73 minutes of action.
MBU (0-3) will try again for its first win of the season Monday at SMA Worth Field against Lancaster Bible College. A pre-game ceremony recognizing the anniversary of 9/11 and honoring local first responders will begin at 4:30 p.m.
