Codie Heilig and
A'Cetta Farrait combined for 44 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and four steals as Mary Baldwin's women's basketball team battled Meredith to overtime before dropping a 68-62 USA South contest to the Avenging Angels Saturday.
Heilig scored a game-high 24 points and five rebounds before fouling out in overtime - one of three Fighting Squirrels to be disqualified with five fouls in the game. Farrait posted a double-doublt with 20 points and 10 rebounds for MBU, which suffered its second OT loss of the season.
Meredith, led by a 20-point performance by Piper Carriere, jumped on top 19-15 in the first quarter, but the hosts battled back to take a 34-30 halftime advantage by scoring the last six points of the half. The teams battled closely throughout the second half and ended the first 40 minutes even after De'Ja Morgan's layup with 18 seconds left forced the extra five minutes.
Again, the teams were nose-to-nose in the OT period when Heilig drained a free throw with 1:52 left to make it 63-62. Meredith then scored the final five points of the game, all at the free throw line, to secure the six-point win.
MBU has a week to prepare for its next games, a two-game trip to Methodist Friday (6 p.m.) and Salem Saturday (2 p.m.).
