Vernon Fraley,
Jaden Ignacio and
Quentin Hart all scored in double figures, but it was
Luke Ogle's three point swish from deep in the left corner as the final buzzer sounded that sent Mary Baldwin's men's basketball team and their home crowd into a frenzy with a 79-76 USA South victory over Brevard Saturday.
MBU saw a 10-point lead evaporate in the final three minutes of the game. Brevard evened the score twice in the last minute, including a Kavan Horton free throw with 14 seconds left that tied the score at 76.Â
Brett Asbury worked the ball up the right side of the court, then found Ogle in the far corner. The 6-7 junior made no mistake as the buzzer sounded and kept the Fighting Squirrels (10-9 overall, 6-2 USA South) in first place.
Fraley led all scorers with 24 points while Ignacio added 17 points. They also led MBU's three-point barrage as Fraley knocked down three of his four tries in the second half and Ignacio drained half of his 10 attempts. As a team, MBU was 12-for-28 outside the arc.
Hart tallied 13 points, including two long-range shots. Asbury balanced nine points and nine rebounds. Ogle scored half his points on the last shot of the game and added 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.
Horton, who had a double-double with 11 points and 14 boards, was one of five Tornados in double digits in the scoring column. Carson Evans led the visitors with 13 points.
MBU has the week off before facing Methodist Saturday (2/3) at 2 p.m.
