For the second-straight day, Mary Baldwin's baseball team battled back in the late innings. This time, the rally fell short, although the Fighting Squirrels had the game-tying run on base in both the eighth and ninth innings of Wednesday's 13-11 non-conference loss vs. Stevenson in the first game at MBU's new home - Shifflett Field in Grottoes, Va.
Senior
Michael Robertson had three hits, including a bunt single, double and a triple, and scored two runs to lead MBU's offense.
Noah Kessler,
Josh Lallo and
Kelly Hackley also stroked a pair of safeties in the Fighting Squirrels' 13-hit attack.
The hosts also took advantage of five walks and six Stevenson errors to bounce back from a 13-3 deficit with six runs in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth.
On the other side, Stevenson ripped a pair of home runs in a critical three-run seventh inning that proved to be the difference in the game. The Mustangs, playing their season-opener, also ripped 13 hits, drew nine walks and took advantage of four MBU errors.
Dylan Weatherly was the first of seven MBU hurlers in the game and took the loss after allowing five runs on three hits, three walks, a hit batsman and two fielding miscues.
The Fighting Squirrels (1-1) returns to action Sunday (2/25) with a non-conference doubleheader at Shifflett Field against Penn State Altoona, starting at noon.
